HIGH HOPES DAY CAMP NEWS.... This year EQUI-STAR was able to hold three weeks of equistrain
day camp for special need individuals. The
campers had an exciting time. Each day was packed with fun and new experiences. Everyone really had a chance to improve their
riding skills. The "Extreme Cowboy Challenge" turned out to be both fun and challenging. The participants had to
rope a steer, carry a calf, drag a bag, carry a bucket of water,
cross a bridge, open a gate and walk
through a garbage dump. We also practiced pre-jumping, barrel racing and polo. We had a visit from Dr. Jason Wyatt who showed
us how to float a horse's teeth (even pull a few) and how to draw blood for testing. Our crafts this year included leather
working, tie dye shirts, painting horses, painting flower pots, and making "redneck cowboy horseshoe games." This
year our campers where joined by both the Boy Scouts and the Girl Scouts. This gave the Scouts the opportunity to learn about
horses and to learn what it's like to have a disability. The High Hopes Day Camps were made possible by a grant from Greater
Buffalo Foundation, Wilson Lions and Ransomville Lions.
WASTE MANAGMENT GOLF TOURNAMENT
IS
A BIG WINNER THAT RAISES FUNDS
$10.000.00 Golf Toutnament! On july 11th Waste Managment
of Lewiston held a Golf Tournament to benefit Equi-Star/ Representatives
from Waste Managment had previosly visited Equi-Star
and they really felt that this was a worthwhile organization. A few days later,
we recieved a phone call from Jim Callahan announcing
that they had chosen Equi-Star to be the recipient of ther Golf Tournament.
The event was held at the NiagaraCounty Golf Course
in Lockport, where Carrie Brittin, Miriam and Leo Smith joined the golfers for dinner.
Imagine our surprise when a few weeks later we where
presented a check for $10,000.00! After some consideration, it was decided to use the money to:
Sponsor our horse Belle, build
one turn-out shed for the horses and start a fund drive to raise money to build a 20x40 pavilion on our property.
The turn-out shed will provide
shade in the summer and shelterin the winter for our horses while outside. The Pavilion will be used during all of our events
for
shade and shelter for the humans.
