How you can help

Therapeutic riding is a program designed to provide specialized interaction of mentally, physically, and emotionally challenged children and adults with horses in a natural environment. The goal of therapeutic riding is to help encourage the growth of physical, cognitive and emotional skills by combining sport and recreation, education, medicine, along with the integration of human/animal bonding.

Sport and Recreation – Physical Education – Cognitive
Encourages language development Normalizes muscle tone
Generates reasoning abilities Improves balance and coordination
Cultivates sound Judgment Improves strength and mobility
Improves attention and memory Develops physical self awareness

Medicine – Emotional
Builds Self Esteem
Improves Motivation and curiosity
Improves the ability to care for and relate to animals and humans
Fosters social adjustment and independence

For individuals with impaired mobility, horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves their bodies in a manner similar to a human walking gait. These riders can experience increased balance, muscle control, flexibility, coordination and strength. Individuals with learning or mental disabilities are motivated by riding to improve their concentration, attention span, patience and discipline. If a psychological or emotional disability is present, the unique relationship formed with a horse can help improve interpersonal relationships. In addition, all riders can benefit from increased self-esteem and coping skills.
